Grand Rapids Auto Insurance Guide
Grand Rapids car insurance is very expensive. One of the reasons why is because Michigan is a no-fault state. In other words, your medical expenses are covered by your car insurance regardless of who was at fault in an accident. As such, you are required to have Personal Injury Protection, along with two other types of insurance…
Liability insurance:
For the state of Michigan you are reuired to have 20/40/10 worth of liability insurance. In other words, you are required to have, at least, $20,000 worth of bodily injury liability for one person, $40,000 worth of bodily injury liability for all people in an accident, and $10,000 worth of property damage liability. Bodily injury liability covers the medical expenses of everyone except you. Property damage liability covers the damage done to other cars and fixed property including things such as bus shelters or telehone polls. Keep in mind that liability insurance only applies if you are found at fault.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Covers your medical expenses in the event of an accident.
Property Protection Insurance (PPI)
Covers the damage done to parked cars and other stationary objects.
Why do you need bodily injury liability when everyone has PIP in the state of Michigan?
Well, there are exceptions. One of which is that the person who you hit in an accident might not have PIP because they are an out of state driver or you are an out of state driver.
